What Base 65 keeps, and what it never asks for
No accounts, no email, no names
Base 65 never asks who you are. There is no sign-up, no email address, no street address and no payment form.
Winter budget
The numbers you type into the winter budget are used to work out the page you see and are not stored.
Bill Books
A Bill Book stores what you type into it: a name you choose for each home (optional), the county, the fuel, your price and customer charge, the optional non-heating figure, tank details, and each bill's dates, amount and total.
In its database the site keeps a fingerprint (SHA-256) of the book's private link, not the link itself, so a copy of the database cannot open a book, and a lost link cannot be found again or sent to you. The link is also the page's address, so, like every address on this site, it is written to the web server's access log described below. Whoever has the link can open and change the book.
Delete a book any time from the book itself; a book nobody opens for 13 months is deleted automatically. A deleted book is gone from the site at once. Copies can remain for a while in backups: the site's own database backups are deleted within four weeks, and WeldonPC's disaster-recovery copies of the whole server, used only to restore it after a failure, are kept for a limited time and then replaced.
Counters and logs
To stop abuse, the site counts requests per day per address, keeping the address only as a salted one-way hash; counters are deleted after 3 days. The web server keeps a standard access log (address, time, page, browser) for security; it is deleted within about two months. The site's own error log masks private links before anything is written. Base 65 sets no tracking cookie; the only cookie is the form-safety cookie that protects forms from being sent from other sites.
Advertising
Public pages of this site (not Bill Books, results, privacy or terms) show one banner ad from AdEngine (adengine.us), the small ad network run by WeldonPC, the company behind this site. For now the ads are for WeldonPC's own services.
To show an ad, your browser loads a script from adengine.us, asks it for one banner, loads the banner image, and reports once that the page was viewed and once that the banner was shown. Like any website, adengine.us receives your IP address, your browser type and the address of this site with those requests.
- No cookies, no profile. AdEngine sets no cookies, gives you no ID and does not track you from site to site.
- How your IP address is used. adengine.us looks up the approximate city for your IP address in a location database kept on its own server (nothing is sent to anyone else), so that ads meant for one area are shown only there. It also uses the address to count each ad view or click only once and to leave out robots and WeldonPC's own office traffic. The address is not stored with the counts; the temporary entries made from it expire within six hours and are cleared from the server within two days.
- What is kept. Daily totals only: page views for this site, and views and clicks for each ad. The adengine.us web server also keeps a standard access log (IP address, time, address requested, referring site, browser) for security; it is deleted on a rolling schedule.
- Clicking an ad passes through adengine.us, which counts the click, and then opens the advertiser's site, which has its own privacy policy.
- Nothing about you is sold or shared.
Outside services
The only outside service your browser loads is the adengine.us ad described above. Weather readings are fetched by the server itself, not by your browser. Fonts and scripts are served from this site.
